5.2 What does it mean to commit to raising a bilingual child?

It is all very well to say that you are going to do something, writing it down takes a little bit more confidence (I hope your Family Language Plan is all complete), but to actually do it is the crucial thing. So what does it mean to commit to bringing up your son to become bilingual?

It will mean that there is one more thing to pay attention to while he is growing up. There is no way around it; it is going to require a bit more effort from you than if you and your family chose to speak majority language of where you are living. You will have to be prepared to invest some of your time to reach your goal. When your son is still learning the language, you need to be ready to have patience and wait while he forms the sentences. You may have to take time out for visits and do the extra bit of reading to increase your son’s exposure to the language.
